Entrevista con Utami Dewi Godjali
¿Cuándo surgió tu inquietud por trabajar con luz y fotografía? // When did your interest in working with light and photography arise?
My interest in the work with light and photography started when I was in high school. When I was young, I used to write a diary that consisted of my daily routine. In college, I got “Introduction to photography” as a subject which triggered my passion for it. As time went by, it transformed my diary into visual works.
Mi interés en la luz y la fotografía empezó cuando estaba en la escuela secundaria. Cuando era joven, solía escribir un diario que consistía en mis rutinas diarias. En la universidad, tuve “Introducción a la fotografía” como materia y despertó mi pasión por la fotografía. A medida que fue pasando el tiempo, transformé mi diario de rutinas en trabajo visual.
En tu obra, las imágenes transmiten mucho movimiento y se ve el tránsito de los cuerpos. ¿Cómo pensas la temporalidad de tu obra? // In your work, the images communicate a lot of movement and you can see the transit of bodies. How do you think the temporality of your work?
I think the temporality of my work represents the journey of experiences in my life and the empowerment of womankind.
Pienso que la temporalidad en mi trabajo representa el viaje de experiencias que es mi vida y el empoderamiento de la mujer.

This particular work represents part of the cycle phase of my life, such as the same dreams repetition, the continuum of tasks of my life, with the similar treatment over and over. The “time” visualization will never be the ending part of the cycle phase in my life.
Esta pieza en particular representa una parte de una fase del ciclo de mi vida, representa la repetición de los sueños, tareas que desarrollo de forma continua, con el mismo tratamiento una y otra vez. La visualización del "tiempo" nunca será la parte final de la fase del ciclo en mi vida.
¿Qué pasa con los seres que habitan esos espacios y esa luz? / What happens to the beings that inhabit those spaces and that light?
I usually use a female model or part of my body for my work. I mostly work with slow speed technique or multiple exposures to represent what is in my mind, that like everything I see, it is something in motion.
Usualmente utilizo modelos femeninas o partes de mi cuerpo en mis obras. En general utilizo exposiciones de larga duración o múltiple exposición para representar aquello que está en mi mente, como todo lo que veo, ligado al movimiento.
¿Cómo se relaciona el espacio y la luz en tu trabajo? // How is space and light related in your work?
Space and light relations is fundamental in my works because through it I can represent my emotions and build visual things through photographs.
La relación entre el espacio y la luz es fundamental en mi trabajo, a través de esta relación puedo representar mis emociones y construir objetos visuales a través de la fotografía.
Si tuvieses que elegir una obra que haya significado un antes y un después en tu búsqueda artística y en tu relación con la luz, ¿cuál sería? ¿Por qué? // If you had to choose a work that has meant a before and after in your artistic search and in your relationship with light, what would it be? Why?
This particular work describes Life Path, meaning that every human being has the choice to live their life. The journey of people’s life always has a dark and light side.
Este trabajo en particular, describe el Camino de la Vida, es decir, la decisión que cada ser humano toma a la hora de elegir vivir su vida. El viaje de vida de cada persona siempre tiene un lado oscuro y un lado luminoso.
About Utami Dewi Godjali // Sobre Utami Dewi Godjali
Born in Jakarta 1984 with the nickname "Memi". Know and love photography since high school, went to college majoring in Public Relations. Currently based in Jakarta – Indonesia and works as a freelance photographer, has attended several group exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad. “My work is based on personal experiences and other forms of diaries also as a healing, most tell about self identity and the role of women, play in the imagination, reality, and dreams, all three seemed to be vague in my life. The mind state which I called "White Box" a safe place for contemplation. I also like experimenting with various media for my output as a form of innovation.”
Nació en Jakarta en 19484 bajo el nombre de Memi. Conoce y ama la fotografía desde la secundaria y se graduó de Relaciones Públicas. Actualmente se encuentra en Jakarta, Indonesia y trabaja como fotógrafa freelance, exponiendo en diversas exposiciones de grupo en Indonesia y el exterior.
“Mi trabajo se inspira en experiencias personales y otras formas de diarios también como experiencia curativa. Mayormente hablo sobre mi identidad, el rol de la mujer, el juego de la imaginación, la realidad y los sueños; estos elementos siempre tendieron a ser vagos en mi vida. Trabajo con un estado mental llamado “La caja blanca” como un espacio seguro para la contemplación.También me gusta experimentar con las redes sociales como plataforma y forma de innovación.”
