// Can you tell us your artistic research when we talk about Lighting design?

// Well, I am actually facing a pulsion that discovered its true character through light as a material and the conscious manipulation of its parameters.

// The first approach was accidental, I started to work as a lighting operator to quit my job as a ticker salesperson while I was studying Theater Direction, a career that I thought was my professional wish at that time. That is why I understand that my research (as a director and as a lighting designer) is connected with the perception, the possibility of create a point of view, the recognition of the value of the environment of what we see and its influence on our perception; and also the dialog between each part of the visual production as a hole.

// Who was your path into the scenic arts and when did you decided to be a lighting designer?

// Accidentally I discovered the theater as a profession being part of the audience when I was a teenager. In that moment for me there only was THE THEATER for me, but not a knowledge of each profession involved in it. I was ignorant.

// Trying to learn everything that I didn't know, I decided to start to study acting and then direction. In the meanwhile, I started a common path for theater people in Argentina: being a serial audience. As a part of the audience, I discovered that the shows with a strong visual component was very attractive to me, because I wanted to become a director, I started to look for the directors of those kinds of shows. Since that day I’ve seen everything that I could.

// When I started to work as a technician, I lost the fears that I had and I worked with amazing shows, everything using manual consoles, through those experiences I fell in love with time. Without any aspirations, I received my first job offer to design and I was forced to accept even when I had no idea about how to do it. That is how the Lighting design came to me, I was convinced to do it, that I could do it. It was a special person that insisted me and told me: You ARE a designer.

// I did that first design and it ended up being a great work, It was outstanding choreography. We premiered and traveled around the world with that show. At some point I received my first critic: The New York Times was talking about my work! In that moment It became visible my new profession, I started to get new offers handed in by artists that I admired ( and I still do). I had no doubt taken Lighting Design as my true profession and I have been working on it since 92’.

// Which relationship can you find between the technical aspect and the Lighting design? Do you think that there is a limit between it?

// The technical aspect is the material support of the design, I have no doubt about it. The technology is part of the decisions, that is why the design has to contemplate the formal limitation. Of course there are some ways to acquire or be able to use some elements that we don’t own, everything can be bought or rented, that is why the real limit is not the technology but the production system.

// Once we understand the production system we are able to design as we wish. I understand that in any field of design, the study of the resources and its availability is crucial, it is also crucial for lighting design: the quantities and qualities, the available accessories, the control system, the personnel in charge, etc., are important.

// In my work, I realize that I unconsciously start from the base of my technical knowledge and perhaps the question refers to that, in that sense, if I did not have knowledge of the technique I could make serious errors such as asking an artifact what another might give me.

// Did you experiment with time and its relationship with light? Is there a work where you particularly explored it?

// Time, I would almost dare to say, is the greatest attribute of light, in fact it is the factor that alters all its parameters. If we analyze the electromagnetic wave: direction, length, amplitude and frequency, we will confirm that time intervenes in all these variables, with certainty impacting on the perception of color and intensity.

// Almost always by default we imagine in still light, but it is completely false, I dare say that if there is movement there is time. Traditionally, each state of light, in Spanish, is called movement, which indicates that it occurs in "a time" and "at a time". There is an idea that I like to keep in mind and that is the “opportunity of light”. My aspiration is that the light is truly timely. But this is not the only option, thousands of designers could offer another and be successful too. Therefore there is something of the opportune that applies in these cases. The opportunity is unique and present, another temporary concept, how is our still mobile present?

// The world turns and sets its times to our luminous present, the scene takes this concept from it for me. At some point it will take a perceptible movement to give a sensation of a certain passage of time, at another the same idea may work better doing it imperceptibly. We can say that time affects the way of perceiving, there is no doubt. And that the use of time in light could even refer to something not necessarily linked to a watch.

// The decision of the execution speed of CUE can have an impact on any other edge of the narrative: place, simultaneity (this could be called time), true, false (a dream), far, that is, it can refer to others non-temporal issues.

// The only experiment I did was about the impact on people's mood according to the intensity of the ambient light. To achieve this experience, I waited for a very large group (200 people) who were drinking, to be distributed at assigned tables at a luxurious event. I waited for them with a high luminous flow, everything was perfectly seen and they could reach their tables and on the way talk with those they met, there was bustle, greetings and laughter. The show was more than half an hour away and I began to imperceptibly decrease the intensity. I wanted to do it this way because experience told me that if they noticed it they would think the show was going to start and I didn't want to interrupt anything. I started very slowly, after 1 minute the scene was still the same but the volume of the voices had lowered, I lowered the intensity even more, the same thing happened with the voices, even lower. As I did not believe that it had been a product of the effect, I slowly increased the intensity and the voices rose again, not only that, they did not notice the experiment and were still in the same positions of casual talk.

// How was your experience with Light Art? Do you have any thoughts about the relationship Light-Space outside theaters?

// I am fascinated by Light Art, seeing pieces of artists that work with light is always revealing to me. I’ve been lucky to visit a lot of expositions and to collaborate with the lighting design of pieces of other artists. And, because I know the benefit of working with some materials outside the theatrical world, I direct since 2007 an expo named OBRALUMINICA that unites artists from the theatrical lighting design working on pieces that are not connected with a particular show. And that leads us to beautiful reflections and long days of professionals meetings.

Algunas de mis obras expuestas en OBRALUMINICA son: // Some of my pieces that I exposed in OBRALUMINICA are:

// This industry has been mostly masculine and the incorporation of women has been recent. Do you have any thoughts about this issue in our profession/industry?

// In this industry we remain being a mystery to the majority, we are attractive, they don't know us, and because we started to work in a field that was forbidden, It has been oxygenated and of course it is know in crisis.

// In all the technical teams where women started to work, it has been improved in dynamics, energy, communication and empathy. I have been living in this environment for the past 30 years, and because of my personal characteristics I have been treated as an equal but only after I proved that I “knew”. Nowadays there is still some double standard, male workers are accepted at the first attempt and women have to prove their knowledge.

// Another thing that usually happens is that we are still offered less payment, but well… we have a lot of aspects to keep improving. Luckily, a few years ago, ADEA was born and we started to think about this issues to improve the quality of life of the professionals of this workfield.

// What is for you to be a Lighting Designer?

// It implies that I have to be prepared and available as a professional and a freelancer. I have to be a manager of my times and my incomes. I have to fight for the work conditions in this workfield.
